In the grand scheme of things, the life of 1970s wild child and occasional Rolling Stones groupie Uschi Obermaier is not one loaded with much import for the times, this time or any other. This movie about her life, therefore, which begins in Germany in 1968 and ends in Mexico some 15 years later, may lead one to little more than a disinterested shrug.

But "Eight Miles High" is an interesting motion picture regardless for doing what we wish more movies did. It presents a time and place, a slice of life if you will, that's richly evocative.

Here in all their possibility and ridiculousless, ecstasy and tedium, are the idealistic communes and boundless love affairs, the limos and anonymous hotel rooms, the drugged highs and wretched hangovers of a woman who, it can't be denied, led a very interesting life for a long while.

(Obermaier now lives quietly in Topanga Canyon, Calif., where she designs jewelry, but that's not what this film is about, thank goodness.)

Obermaier is portrayed by an actress named Natalia Avelon, who clearly knows a thing or two about sexy poutiness. Obermaier, who got started as a nude model, was beautiful in her day, and Avelon is that and then some in ours.

That "Eight Miles High" contains more nudity than we've seen in a movie in years, mostly of Avelon, has helped us reach this conclusion. But hey, there are worse reasons to enjoy a film.
